Navigating social media as a business owner comes with its own set of challenges, but here are some tips I wanted to share.
1. Focus on Value Over Sales:
I aim to share content that's genuinely helpful, insightful, or humorous, rather than constantly pushing my business. Roughly 60% of my posts are about offering value, while the remaining 40% promote my company or services. I believe social media should be a place for connection, not just sales pitches.
2. Post Like It's In-Person:
If I wouldn't say it to someone face-to-face, I don’t post it online. Keeping it real, respectful, and authentic is key to maintaining trust and relationships.
3. Disagree Without Disrespect:
If I ever disagree with someone online, I make sure to keep it polite and respectful. My goal is not to win an argument, but to have a constructive conversation.
4. Engage, Don’t Argue:
When people comment on my posts, I never engage in arguments. Instead, I thank them for their contribution or express appreciation for the engagement. Staying positive keeps the conversation constructive.
5. Stay Neutral on Politics and Hot Topics:
I stay away from posting about politics or controversial social issues. As a business owner, I don't want to alienate half of my audience by wading into divisive conversations.
6. Keep It Personal and Human:
I make sure to share some personal things—whether about my hobbies, family, or life outside of work. It’s not all business because giving people a chance to connect with you emotionally makes a big difference.
7. Keep It Light and Fun:
I try to avoid being stuffy or boring. I like to keep things lighthearted, add a little humor, and sometimes poke fun at myself. It makes my content more relatable.
8. Engage with Others:
I make it a point to like three to five posts a day and comment on at least one post. It’s important to give engagement back to the community, not just ask for it.
